Local Lust: Bittersweets NY's Jewelry Reinventions
Sometimes the best inventions happen by accident. Think Post-It notes, the Slinky, microwaves, penicillin, fireworks, and potato chips. My latest local lust Bittersweets NY can easily be added to this list of fortuitous accidents and trust me, you'll be glad that New York-based welder and metal caster Robin Adams fell into jewelry making out of a life at the foundry.
Although Adams started creating beautiful baubles out of everyday objects in 2002, her exquisite repurposing is a constant reinvention of the wheel, so to speak. Bittersweets NY was first a hobby and project she worked on from her warehouse home in Long Island City where she could utilize her welding talents for girlier objet d'art. Before too long, she moved her jewelry operation to Williamsburg. Adams fashions designs from the earthly and bizarre, so there's never a dull moment or piece to try on. The delicate monogrammed rings, personalized to a T, are my favorite, daily accessory staple, but if you're looking for something more adventurous, check out the vampire teeth collection, inspired by a set of dollar store Halloween chompers. Other not-to-be-missed items? The signature heart-n-dagger was inspired by true love (how romantic!) and her other popular collections — maggots, earthworms, and twigs — all modeled from nature, a no-fail source of inspiration. The quirkiness of each piece is just right, and it makes a lot of sense that a line like this would flourish in a neighborhood like Williamsburg. Currently, you can find Bittersweets NY at one of our beloved L-Bedford stop boutique Catbird (219 Bedford Ave., 718-599-3457).
