By chance, I happened to walk past Chiles & Chocolate (155 Eighth Ave., 212-229-2291) in Chelsea last night. I would have missed it completely if it weren't for the chips and guacamole being offered to passersby. I'm a sucker for these kind of things. The strange thing is that Park Slope's beloved and established Chiles & Chocolate doesn't need to advertise itself like that — luring pedestrians in with promises of Mexican food staples — but for the Chelsea opening, it seems to be fair game. Funnily enough, in the course of my meal, the empty restaurant filled up to capacity. Never underestimate the power of free guacamole.

To give credit where it's due, the second Chiles & Chocolate restaurant opened officially on Saturday, so it's brand spankin' new. Chelsea needs more delicious Mexican spots like this one. I was glad to see that the second location didn't veer too far from its Brooklyn menu roots. In fact, it's practically identical. The house signature dish mole negro is as good as ever. I also opted for the chicken flautas — fried, crispy perfection — and the tacos pollo, prepped with a traditional tinga spice. For dessert, I indulged in a bread pudding concoction doused in strawberries. Not too shabby. If you're in that neck of Chelsea, skip its next door neighbor Chipotle for a proper sit-down Mexican dining experience.
