Remember the decadent chocolate waterfalls coursing into a chocolate-ified river in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory? Pair that kind of dessert intensity with one man's passion and a cacao bean-shaped factory to create the cocoa-based goods. Let's just say, it was a chocolate lover's dream come true to spend the morning with Mr. Chocolate himself, learning to make, mold, and decorate a variety of chocolate confections, inspired by Fall and Halloween. Ever wonder how Jacques Torres (350 Hudson St., 212-414-2462; 66 Water St., 718-875-1269; 75 Ninth Ave.; 285 Amsterdam Ave., 212-787-3256; 30 Rockefeller Plaza, 212-664-1804) and his team of fabulous chocolatiers create such delicious treats day in and day out? Well, I donned a not-so-flattering hair net, lab coat, and gloves and hit the ground running at the Hudson Street headquarters yesterday to find out.
Not only did I work the chocolate conveyor belt, load up the chocolate bar wrapping station, and design my very own dark chocolate pumpkin mold, I also got a seriously cool inside look at what it takes to keep one of New York City's most renowned chocolate shops at the height of its game.
