Marisa Tom | November 24, 2011 9:30 amOn a regular basis, I find myself having those uniquely personal moments — on the subway, on my way home, in the midst of grabbing drinks at my favorite neighborhood bar, you get the idea — where I think to myself, "I love New York City." That feeling of home euphoria is a pretty darn important reminder, especially in those other moments where you can't find a cab, the train is permanently delayed, and the Trader Joe's line threatens to choke you as you grocery shop, of just how amazingly frenetic and fantastic this city is. And I'm more than a little thankful to live here, for better or for worse.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 22, 2011 11:31 amThe whimsical, weird, and wonderfully wacky world of Gaga's Workshop was set loose on a wildly excited group of late-night revelers. The Gaga-ified fifth floor of Barneys (660 Madison Ave., 212-826-8900) has been completely transformed to reflect the artist's zany style and, of course, offers up a store-within-a-store of kooky holiday-themed gifts that include, but are not limited to, chocolate "Poker Face" chips, "Disco Stick" lollipops, fake nails, Gaga's favorite childhood stories, and more.
Last night's opening was nothing short of a trip straight into the madness and genius of Gaga and stylist Nicola Formichetti's minds, and we weren't the only ones curious to see what was inside this over-the-top pop-up.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 18, 2011 1:50 pmTo my fellow gadget-obsessed gals, start-up enthusiasts, and tech-savvy set, let the geeked-out Wired pop-up in Times Square (42nd Street and Broadway) be your holiday season BFF. The highly anticipated holiday store is officially open today, and if you can only think of one reason to head to Midtown's busiest tourist trap hub, this is it. By the grace of the geek gods, we got to hobnob with some of New York's brightest tech stars and, um, Sir Ben Kingsley — knights love forward-thinking inventions, too — at yesterday's opening-night shindig and do a fair amount of "what's in store" reconnaissance.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 11, 2011 7:28 pmJust when I thought my taco obsession had receded into the horizon of Summer's past, new Loisaida (a term derived from the Latino pronunciation of "Lower East Sider") double threat Viktor & Spoils (105 Rivington St., 212-475-3485) presented itself as a new, shiny (taco-related) thing that I couldn't say "no" to. Last night, the brand spankin' new taqueria and tequila bar in the Hotel on Rivington opened its door for a press preview. The official opening is tonight; in fact, you can head there right now to order off the tequila-happy menu.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 9, 2011 6:20 pmThe angels — Victoria's Secret Angels, that is — walk among us, and tonight, they'll take to the blinged-out catwalk for the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show extravaganza. Although I'm unbelievably excited to watch the lingerie-fueled spectacle go down at the 69th Regiment Armory (68 Lexington Ave., 212-686-6556), it's also fun to see that these dazzling dames aren't always sporting giant feathered-out wings and jeweled bras. In fact, I didn't think it possible, but some of my favorite Angels even frequent the same eateries, 'hoods, and boutiques as I do.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 3, 2011 4:40 pmGood things come to those who wait — and wait, we did. Luckily, you no longer have to wonder how exactly a mass clothier (sold in Canadian grocery stores, no less) would translate to a Fifth Avenue shopping emporium. Today, Joe Fresh (110 Fifth Ave.) opened its doors on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and West 16th Street and, in my mind, proved that it is now a fast fashion force to be reckoned with.Read More
Marisa Tom | November 1, 2011 10:00 amI know I am not the only one who's both shocked — only 72 days as a married couple?! — and, sadly, not so surprised that Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from husband Kris Humphries yesterday. While it may be the end of the road for the pair's whirlwind romance, that doesn't mean Kardashian and Humphries didn't make their coupledom "presence" known everywhere they went.Read More
Marisa Tom | October 28, 2011 8:30 amNew Yorkers and out-of-towners alike have been making the most of this week's unusually temperate Fall weather, barring yesterday's downpour. With Halloween weekend upon us, let's take a look now at 11 local spots that stars like Hugh Jackman, Orlando Bloom, Leighton Meester, and Beyoncé frequented for a morning java jolt, cultural pick-me-up, or just because. From Jessica Simpson's midday shopping trip at Bergdorf Goodman to Jessica Alba's cuteness overload lunch outing at Bubby's with her daughters, Honor and Haven, I have to say, these celebrities have exceptional taste in food destinations and fun excursions.Read More
Marisa Tom | October 19, 2011 11:15 amWho is C. Wonder (72 Spring St.)? That would be none other than Chris Burch, also known as Tory Burch's ex-husband, but after a peek inside his new SoHo boutique, I'd say his name will stand on its own two feet soon enough.Read More
Marisa Tom | October 5, 2011 9:30 amAs promised, it's time to meet the sixth panel member of master sommelier Laura DePasquale's tastemaker panel. Alongside five impressively accomplished wine directors, chef Frank Prisinzano sat at the very end of the table with his signature East Village Radio cap on. It was an exciting foodie moment for me as Prisinzano has been a bit of a godsend in my adult life.Read More
